SOTW (student of the week)

...for next week is Joe!  Congratulations Joe!

presentations!

Students in Calliope 3-4 are presenting their research this week and next.  Each student selected a topic of his or her choice (think the funny bone, lava lamps, dachshunds and diabetes to name a few...), used the Big 6 model for research to ask questions and gather information about the topic, and write a four to five-paragraph report using the painted essay format.  Students are in the process of making kiva presentations to their classmates.  Bravo!

science inquiry

We did a science inquiry task examining the different types of bird beaks and their ability to pick up food.  Students used tweezers, spoons, and toothpicks as 'beaks' and tried to pick up a variety of materials representing 'food' - glass stones, paper, sponges and pipe cleaners.  It was unanimously decided (and based on data) that the spoon beak was the most versatile beak shape.

VT maps

We created salt-dough maps of VT for our last theme unit:  geography (with a focus on VT).  Here are the pairs presenting their maps:

popcorn party

Third graders are able to earn "popcorn parties" for silent transitions between centers in math.  These  are photos from a popcorn party earlier this winter.
